Dan McGlone ("I", "me", or "my") built the WeatherAware app as a free app. This page is used to inform visitors regarding my policies with the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information if anyone decides to use my app.
Information Collection and Use
Location Data
WeatherAware requires access to your device's location to provide accurate weather forecasts for your area. Here's how location data is handled:
- Collection: The app collects your geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) when you grant location permission or manually add a location.
- Storage: Saved locations are stored locally on your device using Android's DataStore. This includes coordinates, location name, timezone, and country code.
- Transmission: Your coordinates are sent to the following weather service providers to retrieve weather data:
- National Weather Service (NWS) - For US locations
- Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) - For Canadian locations
- Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) - For Australian locations (weather alerts only)
- Open-Meteo - For international locations outside US/Canada, and for supplemental air quality data (used for health alerts when enabled)
- Google Pollen API - For pollen/allergy forecasts (only when allergy alerts are enabled in settings)
- OpenWeatherMap - For weather map tile layers (temperature, wind, clouds, precipitation overlays on the Maps tab)
- Retention: Saved locations remain on your device until you delete them from the app.
User Preferences
WeatherAware collects user preferences during an optional onboarding flow on first launch and through the Settings screen. These include:
- Temperature comfort (whether you tend to run cold, neutral, or hot) — used to adjust clothing and comfort recommendations
- Health sensitivities — opt-in toggles for migraine (barometric pressure), respiratory (air quality), allergy (pollen), joint pain, and UV sensitivity alerts. All are disabled by default.
- Life Score Card preferences — which lifestyle cards (Open Window, Car Wash, Sleep Comfort, Laundry Drying, BBQ, Frost Alert, Sunset Score) you want to see, and their display order
- Activity mode (general, cycling, running, hiking) — used to tailor activity recommendations
- Advisor section layout — which sections are visible and their display order
Here's how this data is handled:
- Storage: All preferences are stored locally on your device using Android's DataStore. This data never leaves your device.
- Cloud Backup: Preferences are explicitly excluded from Google Cloud backup to protect your privacy. If you switch devices, you will need to re-enter these preferences.
- Device Transfer: Preferences are included in direct device-to-device transfers (when you physically set up a new phone from your old one).
